B.Sc. (Hons) Microbiology

Introduction to the course Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of microbes, organisms that are too tiny to be seen with the unaided eye. The learners of microbiology will explore the role, biology, diversity, mechanisms, ecology, interactions, control, applications and many interesting facets of microbes. Microbiology, a segment of modern biology also deals with molecular and systemic approach in understanding biological systems. Microbiology is therefore a science of far-reaching scope, with applications that affect the quality of human life in a variety of ways such as vaccines and antibiotics. A comprehensive perception on application of microbiology which expands from food-beverage to pharma-industry will be offered will make students industry ready.

This under graduate course will help students to acquire a sound theoretical base with critical laboratory skills in Microbiology. The curriculum additionally trains students for efficient research, technical and professional communication.
The three year course is designed for Std XII pass outs with physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology. Primarily, this course is designed for students who would like to pursue a career in life science focusing on microbes. The course will build the foundation for research in areas like medical microbiology, environmental microbiology and industrial microbiology. Considering interdisciplinary nature and increasing collaborative R&D endeavors, the course includes segments on associated and relevant subjects like computer science, chemistry etc. Students are eligible for jobs in academia, industry, government sector as well as administrative positions after completion of the course.

What are the learning outcomes?

  • To develop basic knowledge and concepts for pursuing research, higher studies and vertical academic mobility.
  • To inculcate perceptions of industrial and research application of microbiology and biological sciences.
  • To develop skills necessary for research, industry and academia through extensive hands-on training on microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, bioinformatics and biochemical techniques.
  • To develop and use critical thinking to find suitable solutions of existing and emerging problems of health for betterment of the society.
  • To foster the capacity to build up clarity and integrity and collaborative relationships to accomplish common goals.

Subjects covered:

General microbiology, Biochemistry, Bacteriology, Virology, Cell biology, Microbial genetics, Cell biology, Immunology, Microbial Physiology, Food and dairy microbiology, Recombinant DNA technology, Boinformatics, Biostatistics, Plant pathology, Microbial biotechnology, Inheritance biology, Medical microbiology, Microbes in Sustainable Agriculture and Development and Industrial microbiology, Biosafety and Intellectual Property Rights.

Lab Infrastructure

The laboratories are well equipped with consumables and instruments for conducting microbiological, molecular biological and biochemical experiments. The institute also offers several state of the art facilities for research to which the students gets exposure and training.

Internships/Project work

Being an integral part of the curriculum, internships and industrial visits are arranged regularly. In previous years, the students obtained R&D exposure, typically during semester breaks in Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Bose Institute, Chittaranjan National Cancer Research Institute, RG Kar Medical College, NRS Medical College, KPC Medical College, Coca Cola, Biocon, to name a few.

Placement & Career Opportunities / Research Opportunities

Placement events are organized at regular intervals and several students have been placed or offered opportunities to work in companies like Biocon, Genpact, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Nerdy Turtles, Thyrocare, etc. Several ex-students have been chosen for Masters and Ph. D in various Indian Institutions and Universities from abroad as well. The Department also organizes workshops, seminars and conferences to help students constantly updated with latest research, broaden perspectives and develop networking with leaders in the field.

Eligibility

Minimum 50% aggregate in 10th or equivalent examination and minimum 60% aggregate in 10 +2 or equivalent with respective subjects from any recognized board, subject to securing a minimum of 45% marks in each individual subject.
