School of Life Science and Biotechnology organized a day trip to Vivekananda Institute of Biotechnology, Nimpith, West Bengal On ninth of May 2019, School of Life Science and Biotechnology organised a day trip for second year students of B. Tech (Biotechnology) program to Vivekananda Institute of Biotechnology (VIB) in Nimpeeth, West Bengal. The students were accompanied by faculty members including Dr. Manoj Kumar Singh, Dr. Abinit Saha, Dr. Arpita Das and Dean of the School, Dr. Chiranjib Chakraborty. The visit to VIB, considered as the hub for rural biotechnology, provided students with unique opportunity to experience various processes of rural biotechnology and Good Agricultural Practice (GAP). Students learnt not only about biogas plant, honey processing, livestock farming and mushroom culture but also become aware of innovative entrepreneurial ideas of selling biopesticides, biofertilizers, honey, mushrooms and mushroom spawns at a very low cost. In the post-lunch session, the Director of VIB, Dr. Birendra Kisor Datta expressed that biopesticides and biofertilisers are economically viable and sustainable solutions for Indian systems. During this visit students explored the complete transformation process of biotechnology from lab to land. The trip had a lasting impact in the minds of students and they were further encouraged to carry out summer internship or short term training from the institute.
