The Department of Microbiology in the School of Life Science and Biotechnology organised a National Seminar on “Interface of Microbiology and Medicine” at the Adamas University Auditorium with support from Microbiology Society, UK on July 23, 2019. Respected Vice Chancellor of the Adamas University, Professor Madhusudan Chakraborty delivered the inaugural speech. Invited speakers from National Institutes included Dr. Syamal Roy from National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Dr. Nahid Ali from Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (CSIR-IICB), Dr. Maumita Bhaumik from National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (ICMR-NICED) and Dr. Palashpriya Das from National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER). Talks were on challenges in the management of visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) with focus on the diagnosis of the disease, probiotics and human health, importance and promises of microbiome and origin of antibiotic resistance. Dr. Arindam Mitra, Head, Department of Microbiology, Adamas University and Microbiology Society Champion gave an overview and role of Microbiology Society. Dr. Mitra received funding from Microbiology Society to organize this seminar with support from students, faculty members, staff and management at Adamas University. Previously, Department of Microbiology organized Microbiology Workshops in 2017 and 2018 which were also supported by Microbiology Society, UK. More than 150 students comprising of enrolled and new students in the School of Life Science and Biotechnology at Adamas University as well as students from Kalyani Public School have actively participated in the seminar. The seminar was highly interactive and there were plenty of questions from the audience at the end of every talk. Quiz on talks and feedback form was distributed to all participants for evaluation of the seminar. All participants received seminar kit and certificate of appreciation.
